| In the same way that the drought is starving the land, our cattle and our productivity, a spiritual drought within our lives also starves us in other ways. Absence of rain on the land causes empty dams, dying beasts and poor returns.......and in the same way a spiritual drought robs us of eternal life and a meaning and purpose here and now. A spiritual drought is caused not by the absence of rain, but by the absence of God. Without knowing God, life has no meaning, there can be no true happiness or peace, there can be no contentment and in the end it will result in eternal separation from God. On the other hand, a life lived with God present is happy, peaceable, usually quiet and results eventually in eternal life.
The Bible records that man and woman were made specifically for friendship with God. We are social creatures and we need interaction with one another, but we need it most with God. In the same way that someone in solitary confinement will eventually go mad, we cannot hope to survive without fellowship with God. The Bible however promises us that "If you seek Him, (God) He will be found by you." (1 Chronicles 28:9 New International Version) God is waiting anxiously for our return.
So a spiritual drought is the absence of God.
We are aware of our need for rain, for good crops, healthy cattle, good bank balances, fruit and vegetables etc, but these needs pale when compared to our great need for Jesus. In the scriptures Jesus said "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4 New International Version) It is presumption to think that our physical needs are all that matter. Something must be done about these droughts, and strangely enough the cure for one is the cure for the other. The cure to a spiritual drought is ironically the cure to the physical drought blighting the land.
