Big Dam 7 overflows for the first time in Nov 2000The town of Mt Morgan, for many years a mining town has always had water shortage problems, even after the initial dam was built.  Many houses burnt down in the early years because there was no fire brigade or running water.  In 1999 the existing dam, Big Dam Number 7 was extended by 4 meters in height so that the towns water capacity was enlarged.  Some scoffed at this extension because the catchment area was so small.  Many people, including some scientists stated that the dam would never again overflow because it was too large for its catchment. Of course putting a dam on top of moutains has always seemed a ridiculous idea, but Mt Morgan had nowhere else to put one.

In early 2000 the water in the dam was nearing empty and the council had begun pumping from Fletchers Creek 15 kilometres out of town, but water was short there too.  Soon trucks were to begin bringing water from the Fitzroy River near Rockhampton at the cost of about $12000 per month. (a lot for a town of 2500 people).

One Thursday  morning at a meeting of the Combined Churches Committee in Mt Morgan, it was suggested that a public prayer meeting be held for rain.  This was hosted by all the churches to pray specifically that the dam would be filled.  This event occurred in September 2000.  Because of the great need the town had, this prayer service became a newsworthy item and was shown on Channel 9 National News.  ABC Radio and other local media interests also telecast  and printed news on these happenings. (copies to be posted soon) The prayer service had representation from all 8 church affiliations in the town and the very next day it began raining.  The prayers had been heard in Heaven.

Just 6 weeks later the dam overflowed for the first time.  Such a large number of people travelled to the dam to see this sight that Byrnes Parade needed major work to fix dozens of potholes caused by the traffic.

Once again, news of this was telecast nationally.  God had heard the prayers offered up and honoured them.  He had done what many said was an impossible task, but nothing is impossible to God.  What is amazing about it all was that to fill the dam required an incredible number of inches of water in a very localized place.  This is exactly what occurred, except that this large number of inches did not rain down anywhere else.  Many places had good rain, but it was only the Mt Morgan water supplies small catchment area that had the inches and inches required.  Thank you God for your goodness and faithfulness.

Mayor Stan Lean (the mayor at that time) wrote a letter stating such things. A copy of this letter can be viewed here in Word 97 .doc format.

Letter from the Mayor of Mt Morgan

So it is obvious that prayer can bring an end to devastating circumstances. We do find ourselves in such a place at this present time and in the same way as the citizens of Mt Morgan, let us turn to God in humility and prayer and ask Him to change the circumstances we find ourselves in.
