The Bible records how Elijah, a man living about 3000 years ago brought a severe drought to an end by His godly life and humility before God. Elijah was not actually any better than we are, it was just that he realized that God was the only hope for his country, and so he prayed. In fact, the Bible says that "Elijah was a man just like us." (James 5:17) In other words, we are able to do the same things that Elijah did...if we copy his example, God will hear our prayer too. God does not have favourites and so what remains is that we must come to God as the solution to our problem/s.
The Bible tells a story about a drought in the land of Israel which lasted for many years. In fact it didn't even rain at all for 3 years. The details are found in 1 Kings 17 & 18. The drought was so severe that many brooks dried up, and the King and his servant searched the whole country for grass in the hope of saving some of the royal horses. The story tells us that people and animals died because of the lack of food and water. However a day came when a large number of Israeli people decided that they had to turn back to following God. Its actually a remarkable story.....several thousand of them confessed their sins before God at a place called Mt Carmel, and it was later the same day after this confession and Elijahs prayers that the first rain fell. The rain was a result of humble prayer to God.
When the people of Israel chose to follow their God again, and Elijah went to his knees in prayer, the drought was broken. The spiritual principles are the same for us now. We must return to our God and pray. If we are sincere we will certainly have our prayers answered. There are a couple of occassions in recent history when such prayers have been answered........none perhaps more remarkable than the story of severe water shortage in Mt Morgan, a small Queensland town.
