Shirk is the Islam word for the sin of associating a partner with God. We all know that there is only one God and that it is a terrible sin to worship any other. The Injil (part of the Bible) confirms that there is only one God in this way. "The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. The second is equally important; Love your neighbour as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these." Mark 12:28b-31

If the Injil confirms that there is only one God, then why is there such confusion over the matter?

It is due to the nature and personality of God. God is an infinite being who is far beyond our ability to understand. He has many attributes and is unlimited in any way. So to try and define God always leads to frustration. Let me explain it as best as I can.

Each person who lives on our planet is a created being. God created us at the beginning and He made us to have a mind, emotions, decision making capability, a body, a spirit and a unique personality. Each of these components belongs to you, but there is also a degree of separation in them. Each of these unique parts are like rooms in a house. The house is still one house, but nonetheless it has different sections. The Injil indicates something similar with God, although He is far greater and more complex than any human being. Our best attempt to describe Him is truly meaningless.

The Injil refers to the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. One example is in Matthew 28:19 where Jesus commands disciples to be baptised in "the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit." but in another place Jesus said that "The Father and I are One." John 10:30 and also "There is only one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and there is only one God and Father, who is over us all, and in us all."" Ephesians 4:5-6

The Injil is clear that there is only One God, but that in a mysterious way, He is able to achieve His work in multiple people and places at the same time. This is because the nature of God is that He is All Powerful, All Knowing, and Everywhere Present. He is able to be in all places at the same time, and knows all secrets.

Even though portions of the Injil could lead a person to conclude that there might be more than one God, this is the wrong conclusion. Rather, Jesus is a part of the personality of God, Jesus is God in a human form. The Spirit of God is also another part of the same God, in the same way that we ourselves have a spirit. (rahul-hayah) The Father is also a portion of God which we often consider as being the divine will of God and the supreme power. However, the Injil teaches us that though all these things seem as times to be separate, in reality they are all part of the All Powerful One.

It is not shirk to consider Jesus to be God, nor is it shirk to consider the Spirit of God to be God. These are ways God has revealed Himself to us. Also, because God is so mighty and unlimited, we cannot assume to understand this either. Instead we believe that it is true even though is it hard to comprehend.

The Injil states the mission of Jesus to earth as such, "For God so loved the world, that He sent His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it" John 3:16-17 This verse is not meant to mean that there are two Gods or that Jesus is the biological reproduction of God, but it means that God is so concerned for the sinful condition of humanity that He decided to intervene. He Himself became a human being so that He could make the mercies of God available to us.

We can receive the pardon for our sins and the gift of paradise as a free gift, the Injil says so in this way. "But now God has shown us a different way of being right in His sight, not by obeying the law but by the way promised in the scriptures long ago. We are made right in God's sight when we trust in Jesus to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done." Romans 3:21-22 Because of the perfect standard of Jesus own life, and the death He died in our place. He is able to make provision for us.

Sadly, many people believe they must work hard to earn merit with God. They think that if they are generous, pray, be kind, and fast they will please God. No longer do we need to remain in doubt because through Jesus death on the cross, the doorway to paradise has been opened. Through Jesus we are able to obtain the pardon for our sins and right standing with God. Through Jesus, we make God happy with us.

If you would like to receive the free provision of God for the forgiveness of your sins, and the certainty of paradise, here is a prayer you may pray to do so:

"Jesus, I believe that the Injil is right when it says that God truly loves me. I believe that through your good life and death in my place, my sins can be removed and I can avoid judgement. Today I lay my life into your hands and ask for mercy. I ask for you to receive my spirit and make provision for me in paradise. I ask that my heart will become clean and that the Spirit of God will come to live within me. Make me a person that you would like me to be. My desire truly is for your ways and your blessings. Your servant."
