When a Muslim becomes a disciple of Jesus, should he or she abandon their Islamic ways and become like the Christians. No, that is not entirely necessary. Many of the things good Muslims do are appropriate and decent. Fasting, prayer, charity, faith, and these kinds of things are good. Women must be modest and dress appropriately. Continue to greet each other in peace. Continue the ablutions of washing hands and feet before worship. It is good to remove your shoes before entering a worship area, because this is respectful and clean. Continue to bow in prayer. Abstinence from pork and wine are good practices which you should continue. Continue to prostrate yourself when you pray. The Injil says this, "It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay no greater burden on you than these requirements: You must abstain from eating food offered to idols, from consuming blood or eating the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality. If you do this, you will do well." Acts 15:28-29 However, outward practices and our traditions do not make us clean. Only inward things make us clean. It is the condition of our heart which will please God and not the manner or way of our customs and traditions. Our traditions and customs are good, but we must always remember that outward practices are not what draws us near to God. Our trust must never be in our traditions or practices to save us, but rather our trust must be in Jesus Himself. This is the reason why when we accept Christ we can often keep our culture. Our style of music or method of praying or way we eat are outward things which are all fine if done with the right heart toward God. It is the inward sins and wrong attitudes and motives which we must change. Finally, the main change that is required is to learn to walk in the love of God. This is a challenge because without Jesus, this love is not present, but as you receive freely of this love, be a giver of it also. Do kind deeds to others and share with them of the goodness you yourself received. Grow in your knowledge of the Injil and pray for those who are needy. These things will make you strong and give you much grace as a disciple. |
